She received the Elly’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 and has been an Adjunct Professor of Theatre Arts at American River College since 2003.
Ms Stevens received her MFA from Ohio University’s Professional Actor Training Program and began her professional career at the Old Globe in San Diego. She worked in the English-speaking theatres of Vienna, Austria for the next ten years. Upon returning to the States, her work has been seen in regional theatres across the country, including the Idaho Shakespeare Festival; Lost Nation Theatre, VT; Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia; TheatreWorks, Silicon Valley; the Magic Theatre, San Francisco; Sierra Repertory Theatre, Sonora, CA and local Equity companies in Sacramento.
Janis has been also a Drama Desk Nominee for her portrayal of Vivien Leigh in the off-off Broadway production of VIVIEN, a role for which she also received the Bay Area’s Dean Goodman Choice Award for Solo Performance. She is a Resident Company Member of the Theater at Monmouth in Maine where she directs and performs during the summertime. Her work as a director has also received much acclaim across the country and she is extremely proud to be a member of Actors’ Equity
I have studied with such world-class professional trainers as Lee Strasberg and can say without a doubt that Janis Stevens teaches on their level—she gets results. An actor I had worked with had difficulty with truthful reactions… his early training left him weak in sustaining believability. Janis worked with him and he had a major breakthrough— He found the keys to building and maintaining characters that he could be proud of.

Past Professor of Theatre, Richmond College, London England and UCLAJanis Stevens is a consummate theatre artist and brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the workshop setting. What is significant in her work as a teacher, a director, and an actor, is her specificity and attention to the detail. The work is always grounded in the text. The tools she shares, the coaching she so generously gives, the technique she teaches for character/scene work is clearly articulated and invaluable to an actor at any level. You will leave her class with powerful and useful tools for character development that you will come back to every time you approach a role.”
